With the construction of the new Museum of Gold and Silver, Smokvica will receive a cultural institution at the center, and the project will also try to stop the island’s population decline and increase employment. This significant cultural project is being implemented as part of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County project – “Rural Areas, Cultural and Ethnographic Tourist Attractions.” – Neretva County.
The museum will house an existing collection of gold and silver objects. The collection consists of 100 items, of which62 are silver. Currently, objects in several locations in the area of Smokvica Municipality are not accessible to the public, and are an important part of the cultural material heritage of the Municipality of Smokvica and the Island of Korčula. Adequate storage of extremely valuable collections of gold and silver items will preserve them from possible theft and damage. At the same time opening the collection for visitors within the museum will display the rich cultural and historical heritage of Smokvica and the island of Korcula.
The museum will be open daily for individual and group visits, and there will be an opportunity to expertize and get acquainted with the museum’s collection. Special attention will be given to children and young people and to all interested parties to see, learn and get to know the cultural heritage of Smokvica.
